I was contracted as a freelancer by 'Rook Games' to be their UI/UX designer. Jobs included:

  • Design UI Menus and HUD in collaboration with their Level designer 'Andreas Paleologos'

  • Work with producers on how the interface needs to interact with the player

  • Online character selection menu for 2 players

  • Custom UI Art/ menus for players using rather PC or Console

  • Programed temporary code for UI functionality in testing and early building stages

  • Provided feedback to the development and gameplay to the game

Currently Rook Games (Developers) have been developing this game for a year and a half and have shown of this project at PAX Melbourne 2023 and plan to continue development for the foreseeable future.

Settings Menu

The biggest challenge I faced for this project was the online player aspect as it involves more menus and ways of thinking than single player or local multiplayer experiences. The project while mainly PC focused had talks about console cross-play which also involved creating assets and menus for both PC and console players separately creating twice the work than I was used too.

At this point we are still designing this menu and testing solutions that also matches the art style to make a unique design but also is player friendly to navigate.

Level Select

For the Level select screen I needed inspiration from games like 'Mario Tennis Aces' and 'Mario Strikers: Battle League' to figure out how I wanted to design this menu, ​details such as 'how to add customization to characters on the same screen as character selection' was a challenge to figure out.

 

Together with the team members at Rook Games are still trying to figure it out but we are going in the right direction with making the accessories placed on the characters as stickers to match with the aesthetic of the game.
